Cuba Family Code: Country votes to legalise same-sex marriage

About two-thirds of the population voted to approve a new Family Code. It will also give gay couples the right to adopt children. But there was significant opposition to the measure, with some calling for a ‘no’ vote. The vote comes amid a power crisis in the country which has seen thousands of Cubans affected by power cuts. The new law is the first to be approved by the Cuban government in more than 50 years. It is also the first time the country has allowed same-sex couples to be allowed to marry.
