Passkeys replace the riot of keystrokes needed for passwords with a biometric check on our phones or computers. They also stop phishing attacks and banish the complications of two-factor authentication, like SMS codes, that are tied to the password system’s weaknesses. Apple demonstrated passkeys at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June and had said they’d come to iOS 16 and MacOS Ventura this fall.
