Jim Florio, feisty former N.J. governor, congressman, dies at 85

Jim Florio was a pugnacious Democrat whose landmark initiatives on gun control and the environment endured decades after he was denied a second term because of his tax increases. Florio authored the nation’s Superfund law to clean up heavily polluted sites that plagued the Garden State. He was an amateur boxer and U.S. Navy officer, who served eight terms in Congress. His four years as governor from 1990 to 1994 were best known for the voter revolt against his $2.8 billion tax increase.
