Russian men flee the country. Many are showing up in Istanbul

Russian men flee the country, by land or air, days after President Vladimir Putin’s announcement to mobilize additional forces to bolster his flailing war in Ukraine. Istanbul is a destination of choice because it is one of few places where Russians can travel to without visas. Many anti-war Russians have settled in Istanbul, along with refugees from Ukraine. Putin signed a law last week that sentenced those who refused to serve, or evaded service, to 10 years in prison. Those who speak up against the war and mobilization are being arrested, beaten in custody and sent to be drafted in the war.
